A Bar Mitzvah marks a Jewish boy turning 13, the age at which he takes on the responsibilities of adulthood in Jewish tradition. A Bat Mitzvah marks the same milestone for a girl, at 12 or 13 depending on the community. The occasion often includes a reading in the synagogue, followed by a celebration with family and friends.

Mazel tov, which means good luck or congratulations, is the classic greeting. Beyond that, write to the young person directly: recognise the work that went into preparing, say what you admire about them, and wish them well for the years ahead.
