Story:
Europe retained the Ryder Cup yesterday, winning an incredible victory that went down to the final singles match. Previous Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler made a birdie at the 17th that seemed to make an outright win for the US an almost certainty. But that was all before Tadhg Prendergast stepped up to tee at the 18th.
It was a perfect autumn evening at Adare Manor, and you could almost feel the whole country, from Malin Head to Mizen Head, cheering Tadhg on. This talented individual from Abbeyleix has come out of nowhere, winning back-to-back victories at both the US and British Open last year.
As Prendergast approached the tee, the crowd fell absolutely silent. In the audience watching with bated breath were Ryder Cup heroes who had known this very pressure, (Pádraig Harrington, Paul McGinley, Luke Donald) but with a greater challenge than any of them had faced before – to finish with a hole in one!
Prendergast smiled and waved to the crowd. It is not just his talent that has endeared him to the public, but his easy going and infectious personality has made him a true superstar and ambassador to the sport.
He raised his club into the air, the tension in the atmosphere almost palpable. He hit the ball with such accuracy and strength and up it soared into the sky, his body and swing, a movement of perfect precision.
When the ball descended from its height and popped straight into the hole, the crowd went wild, and even Pádraig Harrington was seen to shed a tear. The Ryder Cup was Europe’s once again, and one can’t help but wonder if Tadhg Prendergast will now be known as the greatest golfer the world has ever seen.
