If you choose “Her”:

Headline: SINÉAD KINSELLA WINS DUBLIN CITY MARATHON

Sub-headline: Roscrea woman sets new course record!

Story:

A record number of over 20,000 people registered for this year’s race through the streets of Dublin city. Many ran for fitness, some for charity but most just for the fun of it.

Some dreamed of being in the top 100 finishers. Only a very few, however, had a podium position in their sights. One of those select few was Roscrea woman Sinéad Kinsella.

A year of tough training that often had her up before noon on weekends, and on a strict diet of Diet Coke and Kit Kats has seen Sinéad reach new levels of fitness. Not since she was eight years old and spent every school break chasing boys in the schoolyard, has she been in such good shape.

After winning the World Championship Three-Legged race in Cork this year and the International Egg and Spoon race in Belfast two months ago, all eyes were on Sinéad Kinsella to bring an end to the Kenyan dominance in Dublin.

At 9am, the runners were lined up and ready at Fitzwilliam Square. Among those on the front row, in recognition of their performance, were Mukunzi (Kenya), Tadesse (Ethiopia), Chemaoi (Kenya) and Kinsella (Roscrea). The starting gunshot was on time and they bolted off the starting line, with the two Kenyans taking an early lead.

Kinsella quickly moved out in front on O’Connell Street but lost ground through the Phoenix Park, when she stopped in the zoo to say hello to the newest arrivals. She managed to make up ground through Crumlin and took the lead again down the Templeogue Road.

There was no doubt who the local spectators had come out to cheer on. It was unusual to see so many men of all ages scream her name – ‘Sinéad, Sinéad, Sinéad,’ they yelled as she flew past. Again, Kinsella lost ground after stopping to sign autographs and T-shirts in Milltown. An enthusiastic young fan was given a jockey back all the way down Foster’s Avenue.

Some commentators began to write Kinsella off, but those commentators had not been the ones following her career, and who knew she still had what it takes. Passing the studios of RTÉ, she stopped briefly to chat with Dáithí Ó Sé about the price of a pint in Dublin before storming down Nutley Lane and on to Merrion Road.

The Kenyans and Ethiopian were passed on the Grand Canal as if they were out for a Sunday stroll. Only one figure turned on to College Green heading for Merrion Square, and the crowds erupted in delight to cheer home the people’s favourite Sinéad Kinsella as she crossed the finish line with a new course record of 2:07:14.

The people of Roscrea will walk taller tomorrow knowing that Sinéad Kinsella is one of their own.

If you choose “Him”:

Headline: TADHG KINSELLA WINS DUBLIN CITY MARATHON

Sub-headline: Roscrea man sets new course record!

Story:

A record number of over 20,000 people registered for this year’s race through the streets of Dublin city. Many ran for fitness, some for charity but most just for the fun of it.

Some dreamed of being in the top 100 finishers. Only a very few, however, had a podium position in their sights. One of those select few was Roscrea man Tadhg Kinsella.

A year of tough training that often had him up before noon on weekends, and on a strict diet of Red Bull and Yorkie bars has seen Tadhg reach new levels of fitness. Not since he was eight years old and spent every school break chasing girls in the schoolyard, has he been in such good shape.

After winning the World Championship Three-Legged race in Cork this year and the International Egg and Spoon race in Belfast two months ago, all eyes were on Tadhg Kinsella to bring an end to the Kenyan dominance in Dublin.

At 9am, the runners were lined up and ready at Fitzwilliam Square. Among those on the front row, in recognition of their performance, were Ndungu (Kenya), Gebre (Ethiopia), Kipchumba (Kenya) and Kinsella (Roscrea). The starting gunshot was on time and they bolted off the starting line, with the two Kenyans taking an early lead.

Kinsella quickly moved out in front on O’Connell Street but lost ground through the Phoenix Park, when he stopped in the zoo to say hello to the newest arrivals. He managed to make up ground through Crumlin and took the lead again down the Templeogue Road.

Some commentators began to write Kinsella off, but those commentators had not been the ones following his career, and who knew he still had what it takes. Passing the studios of RTÉ, he stopped briefly to chat with Patrick Kielty about the price of a pint in Dublin before storming down Nutley Lane and on to Merrion Road.

The Kenyans and Ethiopians were passed on the Grand Canal as if they were out for a Sunday stroll. Only one figure turned on to College Green heading for Merrion Square, and the crowds erupted in delight to cheer home the people’s favourite Tadhg Kinsella as he crossed the finish line with a new course record of 2:07:14.

The people of Roscrea will walk taller tomorrow knowing that Tadhg Kinsella is one of their own.
