About Joseph Perrier Champagne
The house was established by Joseph Perrier in 1825 at Châlon-sur-Marne, where Perrier's father, François-Alexandre, had helped his father-in-law in a small wine business. Châlon-sur-Marne, now off the beaten track in terms of the Champagne trade, occupied a more central position in the 19th century. More firms had premises in the town then, and, just ten years before Joseph Perrier set up business, Napoleon had visited Châlon-sur-Marne to see for himself the cellars of Jacquesson, which were reputed to be the finest in all Champagne.
On his death in 1870, Joseph Perrier left a successful business to his grandson Gabriel Perrier, who, however, had little inclination to run a Champagne house and eventually sold the firm to Paul Pithois in 1888. Pithois continued to develop the House and undertook research on wine fermentation with Louis Pasteur. The family had been in the wine business for many generations, having vineyards at Cumières, Hautvillers and Damery.
Today, under the leadership of Jean-Claude Fourmon (a descendant of Paul Pithois), it owns 20 hectares of vineyards and produces 54 000 cases from estate-grown and purchased grapes.

Cuvée Royale Brut Millésime 2000
Top 100, Brut Strength
While quality and prices are as high as ever Champagne still delivers value. BY BRUCE ANDERSON
Joseph Perrier impressed with three outstanding bottlings. The Brut Champagne Cuvée Royale 1999 (93) shows precision and freshness, keeping its graphite, citrus, peach and roasted almond flavors focused; the Brut Blanc de Blanc Champagne Cuvée Royale NV (92) is tightly wound and intense, with an appealing green, herb and leaf accent to its flavors of vanilla, toast and coffee; and the Brut Champagne Cuvée Joséphine 1998 (92) delivers more refinement and gracefulness, with bread dough, peach and citrus note.
